Paul Bogle
Paul Bogle (c. 1820–1865) was a
Jamaican Baptist deacon and a National Hero of Jamaica. A close ally of
politician George William Gordon, he became deacon of Stony Gut Baptist Church
in 1864 and advocated for justice for Jamaica’s poor. After authorities refused
to hear local grievances, Bogle led the 1865 Morant Bay Protest, which
escalated into a rebellion. He was captured and executed by British authorities
on 24 October 1865.
Honoured in 1969 as a National
Hero, Bogle appears on Jamaica’s 10-cent coin and formerly on the two-dollar
bill. Schools and institutions, including Paul Bogle High School and Britain's
Bogle–L’Ouverture publishing company, also bear his name.
