Gustaf VI Adolf (1882–1973)

  • King of Sweden: 29 October 1950 – 15 September 1973.
  • Eldest son of King Gustaf V and Victoria of Baden.
  • Crown Prince for 43 years before ascending the throne at age 67, making him the world’s oldest heir apparent at the time.
  • Lifelong amateur archaeologist with a focus on Ancient Italian cultures.
  • Advocated civil rights; met Martin Luther King, Jr. in Stockholm.
  • Motto: Plikten framför allt ("Duty before all").
  • Known for modesty, avoidance of pomp, and popularity among Swedes.
  • Oversaw early stages of constitutional reforms; monarchy’s powers were later reduced after his death (1975 Instrument of Government).
  • Died shortly before his 91st birthday; buried in Haga Royal Cemetery instead of the traditional Riddarholmskyrkan.
  • Succeeded by his grandson, Carl XVI Gustaf.
