Austria - 1974 - 10 Groschen - Coat of Arms
Austria
Austria’s coat of arms has medieval origins and was long used by the Habsburgs, whose emblem featured a double-headed eagle symbolizing the Holy Roman Emperor. Since 1919, the republic has used the current single-headed eagle design—except during 1934–1955—with broken chains later added. The eagle, once an imperial symbol, became broadly associated with German identity, linking Austria and Germany. Other European states, such as Albania, Romania, Russia, and Serbia, use eagles whose origins trace instead to the Byzantine tradition.
