Masai Lions

The Masai lion (Panthera leo nubica), also known as the East African lion, is a subspecies native to eastern Africa. It was originally described from "Nubia" and includes former subspecies like massaica, first recognized in Tanganyika (now part of Tanzania). Male Masai lions typically measure 2.5–3.0 meters (8.2–9.8 feet) in length, while females are slightly smaller at 2.3–2.6 meters (7.5–8.5 feet). Males weigh between 145–205 kg (320–452 pounds), and females range from 100–165 kg (220–364 pounds). Lions stand about 0.9–1.1 meters (3.0–3.6 feet) tall at the shoulder.

Male Masai lions are known for their diverse mane characteristics. The mane size increases with age, with older males having more extensive manes. Lions living in higher altitudes (over 800 meters) develop fuller manes compared to those in the lowland, warmer regions of Kenya, where manes may be sparse or absent.
