Guernsey - 1971 - New Penny - Coat of arms
The coat of arms of Guernsey, closely
resembling those of Normandy, Jersey, and England, features three lions (or
leopards) and serves as the island’s official symbol. Its design derives from a
seal granted by Edward I in 1279 for joint use by Guernsey and Jersey, with
separate seals established by 1304. Over time, the seal’s design evolved: a
stylised and unheraldic version introduced in 1832 was later corrected in 1884,
when traditional heraldic forms were restored.
