Hungary | 1995 | 100 Forint | Coat of arms

Hungary

Hungary’s coat of arms, adopted on 11 July 1990 after the end of communist rule, revives a medieval design long used in various forms. It consists of a vertically divided shield: the dexter side bears the red-and-silver Árpád stripes, traditionally symbolising Hungary’s four major rivers, while the sinister side shows a silver double cross on a red field, rising from three green hills beneath a golden crown, representing historic mountain ranges. The shield is surmounted by the Holy Crown of Hungary, associated with Saint Stephen and preserved today in the Hungarian Parliament.
