Japanese flying squid

The Japanese flying squid (Todarodes pacificus) is a short-lived species found throughout the northern Pacific, from Japan and China to Russia, Alaska, and Canada, with concentrations near central Vietnam. Adults have a mantle with fins used secondarily to a siphon that enables jet propulsion, and possess eight arms, two tentacles with suction cups, a beak with a radula, ink sacs, and three hearts. Their age is determined by daily growth rings on statoliths. Females reach up to 50 cm in mantle length, males are smaller, and individuals weigh up to about 0.5 kg. They inhabit upper ocean layers in waters from 5–27 °C and live for roughly one year.
