Tiger
The tiger (Panthera tigris), the largest of the big cats, is distinguished by its striped orange coat and solitary, territorial nature. As an apex predator, it hunts mainly deer and bovids and requires extensive habitats, leading to frequent conflict with humans in densely populated regions. Once widespread across Asia, the species has lost over 90% of its historic range and now survives in fragmented pockets from Siberia to tropical swamps. All six remaining subspecies are endangered, with only about 3,000–4,000 tigers left in the wild, largely threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching. Revered in culture and symbolism worldwide, the tiger remains an iconic species and the national animal of several Asian countries.
