Indonesia’s national emblem,
Garuda Pancasila, features the Garuda bird bearing a shield that represents
Pancasila, the five principles of the national ideology, and a scroll inscribed
with the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (“Unity in Diversity”). Designed by
Sultan Hamid II under the supervision of Sukarno, it was adopted in 1950.
Deeply rooted in Javanese and Balinese traditions, Garuda symbolizes knowledge,
power, bravery, loyalty, and cosmic order as the vehicle of Vishnu. Revered
since ancient times, Garuda embodies Indonesian identity and ideology and also
lends its name to the national airline, Garuda Indonesia.
