Atlantic Salmon
Salmon are members of the Salmonidae family, native to North Atlantic and Pacific waters, and related to trout, char, grayling, and whitefish. They have been widely introduced outside their native range and are heavily farmed. Most salmon are anadromous, migrating from freshwater birth sites to the ocean and later returning to freshwater to spawn, though some populations remain in freshwater permanently. They generally home to their natal stream using olfactory cues, with some individuals straying to other waterways at rates that vary by species.
