Israel
The emblem of the State of Israel depicts a menorah flanked by two olive branches, with the word “Israel” written below in Hebrew, usually rendered in blue and white. Adopted in 1948 following a design competition, it is based on the winning proposal by Gabriel and Maxim Shamir, incorporating elements from other submissions. The menorah design draws inspiration from its depiction on the Arch of Titus and recalls the menorah of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, a longstanding symbol of Judaism and enlightenment. The olive branches, echoing the biblical vision of the prophet Zechariah, represent peace.
