Kiribati - 1979 - 1 Cent - Frigate Birds

Frigatebirds

Frigatebirds are a family of predominantly black, long-winged seabirds found in tropical and subtropical oceans. Males display an inflatable red throat pouch during breeding. The five living species, all in the genus Fregata, are now classified in the order Suliformes and are the sister group to the Suloidea. Fossil relatives from the Eocene show more terrestrial adaptations. Frigatebirds are pelagic hunters that catch prey in flight, occasionally steal food or chicks from other seabirds, and breed colonially, producing a single egg each season.
