Mozambique
The national emblem of
Mozambique, adopted in 1990 under Article 194 of the Constitution, features a
socialist-style design with a gearwheel bordered by corn stalks and sugarcane.
At its center are a red sun over a green map of Mozambique, blue waves, a book,
a hoe, and an AK-47 with bayonet, symbolizing agriculture, industry, education,
peasantry, defense, and vigilance, while a red star represents international
solidarity. A ribbon bears the country’s name, updated in 1990 following the
constitutional change to República de Moçambique. Although the emblem reflects
the nation’s struggle for independence, the inclusion of the AK-47 has been
criticized by parliamentary opposition.
