Tuna
Tuna are saltwater finfish in the
tribe Thunnini of the mackerel family, comprising fifteen species of widely
varying size, from the small bullet tuna to the massive Atlantic bluefin, which
can reach 4.6 m and live up to 50 years. Equipped with specialized circulatory
and respiratory systems, tuna can maintain body temperatures above ambient
water and are among the fastest pelagic swimmers. Found in warm seas, they are
heavily targeted by commercial and sport fisheries, and intense overfishing has
driven some species, notably the Southern bluefin tuna, to critically low
population levels.
