Swordfish (Xiphias gladius)
The Swordfish (Xiphias gladius), also called the broadbill, is a large, migratory predatory fish distinguished by its long, flat bill. A popular but elusive sport fish, it has an elongated, round body and loses its teeth and scales as an adult. Swordfish inhabit tropical and temperate waters of all major oceans, ranging from the surface to about 550 m deep. They commonly grow to around 3 m, with maximum recorded sizes reaching 4.55 m and 650 kg. They are the only species in the family Xiphiidae.
