Lionfish
Pterois, commonly known as Lionfish, is a
genus of venomous marine fish native to the Indo-Pacific. Noted for their bold
warning coloration, long pectoral fins, and venomous spines, species such as P. radiata,
P.
volitans, and P. miles are
the most studied, with the latter two becoming major invasive species in the
western Atlantic and Caribbean. Lionfish, popular in aquariums, range from 5 to
45 cm in length and are known for their ornate appearance and distinctive
tentacles, which vary among species and may function in prey attraction and
sexual selection.
