Ostrich (Struthio camelus)
The Ostrich (Struthio camelus) is a large,
flightless African bird and the only living member of its genus, though the
Somali ostrich is sometimes considered a separate species. As the basal living
palaeognath, it is related to other ratites and tinamous. Recognizable by its
long neck and legs, it is the fastest-running bird, reaching about 70 km/h, and
is the largest extant bird, laying the largest modern eggs. Ostriches eat
mainly plants, live in nomadic groups of 5–50, and respond to threats by
hiding, fleeing, or kicking. Territorial males compete for harems of females.
The species is widely farmed for its feathers, leather, and meat.
