The London 2012 Paralympic
swimming events were held from 30 August to 8 September at a packed Aquatics
Centre, where an exceptional 148 world and 97 Paralympic records were broken. A
total of 604 athletes from 74 countries competed across 148 medal events, with
35 nations winning medals. China topped the swimming medal table, while
Australia’s Matt Cowdrey and Jacqueline Freney were the standout individual
performers, winning 16 medals between them, with Freney claiming eight golds.
Numerous athletes from countries including Brazil, Belarus, the USA, Russia and
Great Britain delivered memorable performances, highlighting both emerging
young talent and experienced champions. The Games also marked significant
moments such as the return of athletes with intellectual impairments and
emotional victories like Bradley Snyder’s gold. With the average age of top
medallists just over 20, London 2012 showcased the growing strength and
promising future of Paralympic swimming.
