Fencing
Wheelchair fencing is a Paralympic sport adapted from
able-bodied fencing in which athletes with lower-limb impairments compete
seated in fixed wheelchairs using foil, épée, or sabre. Originating in the
1950s at Stoke Mandeville Hospital under Sir Ludwig Guttmann, it debuted at the
first Paralympic Games in 1960 and has been included ever since. Competitions
follow international fencing rules with adaptations for seated play, fixed
distances, and athlete classification to ensure fairness. The sport has evolved
through technological and organizational changes, expanded global
participation, and produced notable champions, with France leading historically
in medals. At Paris 2024, wheelchair fencing was showcased at the Grand Palais,
highlighting continued growth and new national milestones.
