Triathlon
The triathlon events at the 2012 London Olympics were
held in Hyde Park, with the women’s race on 4 August and the men’s on 7 August.
A total of 110 athletes from 39 countries competed over the Olympic-distance
format of a 1.5 km swim, 43 km cycle, and 10 km run.
In the men’s race, Alistair Brownlee won gold after
breaking away during the run, followed by Javier Gómez and Jonathan Brownlee.
The women’s race ended in a dramatic sprint finish, with Switzerland’s Nicola
Spirig defeating Lisa Nordén by just 15 centimetres, while Erin Densham claimed
bronze. Great Britain topped the medal table with one gold and one bronze,
Switzerland achieved its second Olympic triathlon gold, and Australia extended
its record medal tally.
The Hyde Park course, designed for maximum spectator
access, featured a single-lap swim in The Serpentine, a seven-lap cycling
course past landmarks including Buckingham Palace, and a flat four-lap run,
making the events among the most accessible and popular for spectators.
