Maple
Acer, commonly known as maple, is a genus of about 128 species of trees and shrubs, now classified in the family Sapindaceae. Most species are native to Asia, with others found in Europe, North America, and northern Africa; only one species occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. While most maples are deciduous trees growing 10–45 meters tall, some are shrubs, and a few are evergreen. They are typically shade-tolerant and often grow in riparian or pioneer habitats, with dense root systems that can inhibit other vegetation.
Maples are characterized by opposite leaf arrangement, usually with palmate, lobed leaves, though some species have compound or unlobed leaves. Several species are threatened in their natural habitats.
