Palm Tree
Phoenix
dactylifera, the date
palm, is cultivated for its sweet fruit, dates. It likely originated in Iraq,
where it has been grown since about 4000 BCE, and is now widely cultivated
across tropical and subtropical regions.
The
tree grows up to 21–23 m tall and produces calorie-rich fruits. Historically,
Iraq was the world’s leading producer, once supplying most global dates, with Basra
known for high-quality varieties.
Today,
production has declined due to war, environmental damage, and climate change,
which have reduced palm numbers and agricultural productivity. Efforts are
underway to restore date palm cultivation through large-scale planting and
irrigation projects.
