Lily
Lilium
is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants that grow from bulbs and produce
large, showy flowers. Most species are native to the temperate regions of the
Northern Hemisphere, though they also occur in northern subtropical areas.
Lilies hold cultural and literary significance worldwide. The botanical name Lilium
comes from Latin and was formalized by Carl Linnaeus. It originates from the
Greek word leírion, referring to white lilies such as the Lilium
candidum, and may trace back to ancient Egyptian language roots.
