Ears of wheat

The term “ear” comes from the ancient word ahs, meaning “husk of corn.” In cereal plants such as Zea mays and Triticum aestivum, the ear is the grain-bearing tip of the stem containing tightly packed flowers that develop into edible seeds. In corn, the ear is covered by leafy husks, while in some cereals unripe ears also help in photosynthesis. A parasite called Anguina tritici can damage the ears of wheat and rye, though it has been largely eliminated in most regions through crop rotation.
