Stalk of Rice
Rice is the seed of grass species such as Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima and is one of the most important staple foods in the world, especially in Asia. It provides a major share of global caloric intake and is among the most widely produced crops after Saccharum officinarum and Zea mays. Evidence suggests rice was first domesticated in ancient China, particularly around the Pearl River region, and later spread to other parts of the world. The plant grows about 1–1.8 m tall with long slender leaves and produces grains in a branched inflorescence. Rice is usually cultivated in water-flooded fields, a method that helps control weeds and pests.
