Canadian Loons
Loons—called divers in the UK and Ireland—are aquatic birds of the genus Gavia, found across North America and northern Eurasia. About the size of large ducks or small geese, they resemble these birds in shape and share their fully webbed feet, though they may be mistaken for cormorants, which are similarly heavy-bodied swimmers. Loons swim with their bellies submerged and carry their heads slightly raised, drooping more when in flight. Their flight silhouette resembles a plump goose with relatively small, gull-like wings.
