Prancing Horse

Horses naturally move in four basic gaits: the walk, trot, canter, and gallop, with speeds ranging from about 6 km/h at the walk to 40–48 km/h at the gallop, though sprinting horses can reach 88 km/h. Some horses also perform alternative gaits, such as the two-beat pace and several smooth four-beat “ambling” gaits—like the rack, running walk, tölt, and fox trot—which occur in genetically gaited breeds and often replace the trot.
