Victoria crowned pigeon

The Victoria crowned pigeon is a large, blue-grey, ground-dwelling pigeon from the New Guinea region, distinguished by its lace-like white-tipped crest, maroon chest, and deep whooping calls. It is the largest living pigeon species, typically around 73–75 cm long and up to 3.5 kg in weight. Though similar to the other two crowned pigeons, it can be identified by its more elegant crest, maroon breast, and distinct wing bar. Both sexes look alike. The species makes loud wing claps in flight and produces deep, resonant calls for mating, territorial defence, and contact. Two subspecies exist: G. v. beccarii on mainland New Guinea, and the smaller, darker G. v. victoria on nearby islands.
