Dolphins are cetacean mammals related to whales and porpoises, comprising nearly forty species across seventeen genera. Ranging from the small Maui’s dolphin to the large orca, they inhabit shallow seas worldwide and are carnivorous, feeding mainly on fish and squid. The family Delphinidae, the largest within the cetaceans, evolved about ten million years ago during the Miocene.
