Black parrot
The
Seychelles Black parrot, a dark grey-brown, medium-sized species about 30 cm
long, is endemic to the island of Praslin and is the national bird of the
Seychelles. Once considered a subspecies of the lesser vasa parrot, it is now
regarded as distinct due to notable morphological, ecological, and behavioural
differences, supported by evidence of long-term genetic isolation. It breeds
mainly in the mature palm forests of the Vallée de Mai and lower Fond Peper,
and though it also occurs on nearby Curieuse Island, it has not been recorded
breeding there. The species inhabits woodland, scrub, and gardens.
