Volleyball
Volleyball at the 2012 London Olympics featured indoor
and beach events from 28 July to 12 August, with 12 teams in each indoor
tournament and 12 pairs in each beach competition. Indoor matches were held at
Earls Court, while beach volleyball took place at Horse Guards Parade, drawing
large crowds. Four gold medals were contested amid strong rivalries among
leading nations such as Brazil, the United States, and Russia.
Russia claimed men’s indoor gold after a dramatic
comeback against Brazil, while Brazil defended their women’s indoor title by
defeating the United States. In beach volleyball, Americans Misty May-Treanor
and Kerri Walsh Jennings won a third consecutive women’s gold, and Germany’s
Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann captured the men’s title, the first European
pair to do so. Overall, Brazil and the United States each earned one gold and
two silver medals, reflecting the sport’s expanding global competitiveness.
