Summer Olympics 2012
Table tennis
Table tennis at the 2012 London Olympics was held at
ExCeL London from 28 July to 8 August, featuring 174 athletes across four
events. The sport, introduced to the Olympics in 1988, included men’s and
women’s singles and team events, with team competitions held for the second
time after replacing doubles in 2008. China entered the Games as the defending
champion in all events.
Qualification combined automatic host entries, world
rankings, continental tournaments, final qualification events, and ITTF
invitations. Great Britain qualified six athletes as hosts. Singles places were
mainly awarded based on ITTF rankings after the 2011 World Championships, with
limits per nation. Team event entries were determined by world team rankings
and the number of qualified players, ensuring continental representation.
