Blighia sapida is a tropical fruit tree from the family Sapindaceae, native to West Africa. Its scientific name honours William Bligh, who introduced the fruit to science after taking it from Jamaica to England in 1793. The fruit was brought to Jamaica from West Africa before 1778 and later became an important part of Caribbean cuisine.
