100th Anniversary of the Federation

The Federation of Australia took place on 1 January 1901, when the six British self-governing colonies—New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania—united to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Sir Edmund Barton became Australia’s first Prime Minister, while Sir Henry Parkes played a major role in promoting federation. The federation established a federal government while allowing the new states to retain their own governments and parliaments.
