100th Anniversary of Roland Garros
Roland Garros (1888–1918) was a French aviator and pioneer fighter pilot born in Réunion. He set an altitude record in 1911 and made the first nonstop flight across the Mediterranean in 1913. During World War I, he helped develop a system allowing a machine gun to fire through a propeller and achieved four aerial victories. Captured by Germany in 1915, he escaped in 1918 and returned to combat, but was shot down and killed near Vouziers on 5 October 1918.
His name was later given to Stade Roland Garros, home of the French Open, and Roland Garros Airport in Réunion. Peugeot also used the Roland Garros name for special-edition cars.
