30 years of the fall of the Berlin wall
The Berlin Wall fell on 9
November 1989. So, 30 years after its fall was 9 November 2019.
East Germany built the Berlin Wall
to prevent people from fleeing to West Berlin and West Germany in 1961.
In November 1989, The East
German government announced new travel rules. Large crowds gathered at the
border crossings, and guards eventually opened the gates.
In 1989-90, The Wall was
dismantled, and Germany moved rapidly toward reunification.
The year 2019, Germany and Berlin marked the 30th
anniversary with exhibitions, concerts, memorial events, and ceremonies.
The fall of the Wall became a
major symbol of the end of the Cold War and the division of Europe,
although the Cold War formally continued for some time afterward and the Soviet
Union did not dissolve until 1991.
