Neanderthals were an extinct human species closely related to modern humans, whose remains and tools have been found across Eurasia. Named after the Neander Valley in Germany, they first appeared in recognizable form about 200,000–250,000 years ago and became extinct in Europe around 41,000–39,000 years ago. They developed the Mousterian stone-tool culture and had large brains and robust bodies. Genetic evidence shows that Neanderthals interbred with modern humans, leaving a small proportion of Neanderthal DNA in many non-African populations. Archaeological evidence also suggests that they deliberately buried their dead, while genetic research has provided a complete Neanderthal genome. The associated piece features a crowned portrait facing right on the obverse and a skull with the denomination above it on the reverse.
