Capture of Gibraltar

The Capture of Gibraltar took place from 1–3 August 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Grand Alliance, seeking control of the Strait of Gibraltar and a Mediterranean naval base, attacked Gibraltar after failing to capture Cádiz and Barcelona. Following a heavy bombardment, English and Dutch forces compelled Governor Diego de Salinas to surrender on 3 August. Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt subsequently entered Gibraltar in the name of the Habsburg claimant, Charles III of Spain. Although the Grand Alliance failed to place Charles on the Spanish throne, Gibraltar was later ceded to Great Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The commemorative piece depicts Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and two eighteenth-century warships with the Rock of Gibraltar in the background on the reverse.
