Koehler Depressing Carriage
The description
refers to the Koehler Depressing Carriage; an artillery innovation associated
with the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779–1783).
The obverse
shows Crowned portrait facing right and the reverse the Koehler Depressing Gun
Carriage, with the cannon angled downward.
The gun
carriage was invented in 1782 by Lieutenant George Frederick Koehler of the
Royal Artillery and was designed specifically to allow British guns at
Gibraltar to fire at steep downward angles toward Spanish positions below. Its
distinctive downward-pointing cannon later became an important symbol of
Gibraltar and has appeared on Gibraltar's coinage and other commemorations
