Manx Lugger Fishing Boat
The Manx lugger was a traditional sailing fishing boat of the Isle of Man, particularly associated with the island’s important herring fishery. By the 1840s, Manx herring boats had adopted the lugger or “dandy” rig, influenced by Cornish fishing boats. These vessels generally had two masts and four sails, with the foremast capable of being lowered while fishing with drift nets. Manx luggers became central to the island’s fishing industry, especially from ports such as Peel and Port St Mary.
The Manx lugger fishing boat is also featured on the reverse of the Isle of Man 2 pence coin issued from 2000 to 2003, with the Manx inscription “CLASHT ROOIN, O HIARN” (“Hear us, O Lord”).
