Sri Lilavati
Queen Lilavati,
also known as Leelawathi, was the second woman in Sri Lankan history to rule as
sovereign in her own right. She was the wife of King Parakramabahu the Great
and belonged to a royal family. After his death, she ruled Sri Lanka three
times—1197–1200, 1209–1210, and 1211–1212—during a period of political
instability. Her family had complicated relations with Parakramabahu,
particularly her brother Manabharana and mother Sugala. The main source of
information about Lilavati's life is the Culavamsa.
