The 1957 Sri Lankan One Rupee coin, popularly known as the Buddha Jayanthi coin, was issued to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Buddha’s Parinibbana. The obverse features the Dhamma Chakra, a stupa, and the numeral 2500, while the reverse displays a traditional Sinhala pineapple motif, the denomination, the year 1957, and inscriptions in Sinhala, Tamil, and English. The anniversary was based on the traditional Buddhist chronology, although historians continue to debate the exact dates of the Buddha’s birth and death.
