 Fifth Non Aligned Summit

Srilanka

The Fifth Non-Aligned Summit, held in Colombo from 16–19 August 1976, was a landmark international event for Sri Lanka, attended by 86 countries and chaired by Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Extensive preparations were made, including the construction of accommodation known as the “Summit Flats” and the decoration of roads with national flags. The summit strengthened Sri Lanka’s diplomatic standing and promoted Non-Aligned Movement objectives such as peaceful coexistence, disarmament, decolonization and a more equitable international economic order. A commemorative two-rupee coin was issued in 1976, featuring the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall on the obverse and the denomination and Sri Lankan inscriptions on the reverse.
