The 1968 Sri Lankan Two Rupees commemorative cupro-nickel coin was issued on 16 October 1968 to mark the Second World Food Congress and promote the goal of increasing food production. Its obverse features the statue traditionally identified as King Parakramabahu the Great, standing above a basket of paddy and surrounded by ears of rice, with the words “Grow More Food” in Sinhala, Tamil, and English. The reverse displays the denomination, country name, and year 1968. The coin highlighted Sri Lanka’s efforts toward rice self-sufficiency and commemorated Parakramabahu I, who was renowned for developing the island’s irrigation systems and promoting agriculture.
