50th Anniversary of United Nations
The United Nations was
established on 24 October 1945, following the signing of the UN Charter
by representatives of 51 nations at the San Francisco Conference. The year 1995
marked its 50th Anniversary, celebrated under the theme “We The Peoples of
the United Nations...United for a Better World.”
The anniversary highlighted the
UN's achievements in peace, development, human rights, environmental protection
and humanitarian assistance. Celebrations included international conferences,
educational programmes, exhibitions, concerts and cultural events in many
countries.
The celebrations culminated on 24
October 1995 in New York with a special General Assembly session, where the
50th Anniversary Declaration was endorsed. More than 70 countries participated
in the Global Teach-In programme to educate young people about the UN.
Commemorative coins, stamps and a
special UN50 emblem were also issued worldwide. In November 1995, the UN flag
was carried into space aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis to recognize the UN's
efforts towards the peaceful use of outer space.
